Maili Elementary, Kahaluu Elementary each awarded $25,000 Target grant
Maili Elementary and Kahaluu Elementary have each been awarded a $25,000 grant from Target Corp. to invest in programs to raise student achievement.
At separate check presentations at their schools on August 28, Maili Elementary Principal Disa Hauge and Kahaluu Elementary Principal Naomi Matsuzaki said the funds would be strategically used to support staff and improve academic performance. Both K-6 campuses are celebrating increased reading and math test scores on the 2012 Hawaii State Assessment.
They are among 25 schools nationwide that Target announced earlier this month would be receiving "Give With Target" grants. The company plans to distribute a total of $2.5 million to 100 in-need schools in time for the start of the new school year. Maili and Kahaluu face educational disadvantages associated with high poverty.
At Maili, the grant will fund Hawaiian Studies activities, classroom libraries, and supplies for the school and students.
"We look forward to investing
in these initiatives as they will directly support educators and benefit our students," Hauge said. "We are very thankful for Target's generous contribution."
Matsuzaki said Kahaluu will upgrade classrooms by incorporating technology such as smartboards and computers.
"We are extremely grateful for this grant, which will boost our efforts to equip Kahaluu's classrooms with 21st century learning tools," Matsuzaki said.
